The drawing and thecircuit board arethe same job to me.
Ch. OneIBoth halves
I design objects, and I build theparts that make them work. The form, the material, how it istooled, what it costs and whathappens to it at the end.
Then the board inside it, thefirmware on the board, and thescreen you set it up from. Most people hand one of thosehalves to somebody else. I wouldrather be the one who has toanswer for both.
Ch. TwoIIWhere I learned to solder
BSc at the University of Twente.A degree built on the idea thatyou should be able to solder acircuit, write the firmware for it,and then defend the object tosomebody who has to use it.
It suited me. Everything I madethere was a physical thing withsomething running inside it. It also taught me that a prototypeis an argument, and the ones thatwin are the ones you can handover without a slide deck.
Ch. ThreeIIIAnswerable for all of it
MSc, and where I becameanswerable for the whole objectrather than the clever partinside it. Proportion, material, tooling, and the end of a thing’s life.
I have never seen the two halvesas separate skills. Knowing what a printer canactually hold changes the shapeyou draw. The constraint is notthe enemy of the drawing. Most ofthe time it is the only reason adrawing is any good.
Ch. FourIVThe things nobody asked for
My own object studio, and myexcuse to make the thingsnobody asked me for. One surface, one light, oneaccent, held every week.
Everything is shot on the sameslab of concrete under the sameraking light, so the object is theonly thing that changes. The discipline is the point. Not the canopy. What holds it up.
Ch. FiveVFree from spring
Materials that grow rather thanextrude. Bio materials, plants, the slow end of making. Objects with one moving part.Rooms that smell of hot PLA.
I would rather make one thing thatlasts a decade than ten thatphotograph well. I am looking for a graduationinternship where the drawing andthe electronics are the same job,not two departments.
